The ABCs of Human Rights: Learning Through the ABCs

Welcome back to MHREC’s The ABCs of Human Rights: A Community Voice Project.

Human rights can sometimes feel complicated or distant, written in legal texts and policy documents. But at their heart, they are about people. That’s why, in our latest project, we are trying something different: exploring human rights through the alphabet.

A creative and accessible approach

The ABCs of Human Rights: A Community Voice Project takes the familiar format of the alphabet and uses it as a pathway to understanding. Each letter represents a key idea, value, or right. For example:

  • A for Asylum: the right of people to seek safety when fleeing danger
  • B for Belonging: the importance of inclusion and community
  • C for Citizenship: participation, rights, and responsibilities in society

This playful yet meaningful structure makes human rights more approachable.

Why it matters

Human rights education is not just about knowledge, but about connection and empowerment. By linking big ideas to simple yet memorable concepts, the ABCs method helps participants see how rights show up in their own lives.

Reflection question: How could a short, simple idea like “A is for Asylum” spark a bigger conversation in your community?

The ABCs of Human Rights: A Community Voice Project is built on this simple idea: that knowing our rights helps us use them, defend them, and make sure they are upheld for everyone.
