Wrapping Up in Malmo: Final Reflections on Children’s Rights

Hej! Julian here, back to share the concluding part of my enriching two-month journey studying children’s rights at Malmö University.

Exploring Complex Themes

In this final stretch, our course tackled some challenging themes that significantly broadened my perspective. We delved into the global interpretations of the UNCRC, exploring postcolonial viewpoints that challenge its universal applicability. Gender’s influence on children’s rights and its complex interplay with protection laws also took centre stage. Education, discussed through a film seminar and a memoir, was emphasised as a fundamental right. Our coursework culminated in a paper seminar, where I chose to focus on a Child’s Right to Education—a topic I’ll delve deeper into in future posts.

Deepening Academic and Social Bonds

The latter part of the course deepened my connections with coursemates, enriching my experience beyond academics. Discussions about our diverse cultures highlighted our similarities and differences, offering profound insights beyond the curriculum. The unwavering support from my family, friends, and the Musbieħ community in Malta was also crucial. Their readiness to provide support, whether through a pep talk or just sharing moments of my day, reminded me of the strength drawn from loved ones when far from home.

A Festive Farewell

The ending of my time here felt surreal, like waking from a dream with a newfound sense of seeking new possibilities and perspectives. This was further amplified by the Eurovision Song Contest’s arrival, bringing a festive spirit to my final days in Sweden. Although the event’s values this year did not exactly resonate with my own, the vibrant atmosphere added a joyous note to my departure, marking a memorable end to my academic journey in Malmö.

Looking Ahead

With my assignment submitted and the course completed, I am thrilled to move into the next phase—dissemination. I’m eager to share the knowledge I’ve gained, engage with experts, and continue exploring the profound impacts of children’s rights both locally and globally.

Thank you for following this journey. Stay tuned for more insights as I delve further into the world of children’s rights.

Hälsningar, Julian
