Hello from Malmö! I’m Julian, 23, hailing from Malta and currently navigating the intriguing world of children’s rights at Malmö University. After completing my BA in Social Policy and stepping into government work, my academic and professional compass led me to Sweden.
The Leap of Faith
Though not my inaugural trip abroad, this solo venture represents a significant leap, extending beyond my previous experiences both in duration and depth. The transition, while daunting, was made smoother with the unwavering support of my family, friends, and the Musbieħ community back home, encouraging me to embrace this challenge with optimism.
Classroom Dynamics: A Fresh Lens
The structure and dynamics of the course here in Sweden have pleasantly surprised me. The blend of seminars and lectures diverges from what I anticipated, offering a more interactive and engaging approach to learning. The seminars encourage a participatory style that fosters in-depth discussion and collaboration, while the lectures, though informative, maintain an element of engagement that keeps the material alive and resonant.
Being the only guy in a group of 18 and one of the few fresh off the plane has been an enlightening experience. It’s sparked reflections on gender and diversity within the realm of children’s rights – a perspective I hadn’t fully anticipated exploring.
Engaging Discussions and Revelations
Central to our coursework is the UNCRC, which has guided us through thought-provoking discussions on several significant issues so far. We’ve explored the nuanced impact of climate change on children, delved into philosophical debates about the nature of childhood, and pondered the contentious idea of children’s suffrage. Each topic has been a journey of discovery, challenging my perspectives and encouraging me to view the societal roles of children through a new lens.
Looking Forward
This halfway mark in Malmö has been a period of significant personal and academic growth. It’s been a blend of embracing a new culture, diving deep into the complex tapestry of children’s rights, and reflecting on how these insights resonate with my goals and values.
This adventure, from Malta’s familiarity to the new horizons of Malmö, underscores the beauty of stepping out of your comfort zone and the rich learning that lies in embracing diverse perspectives.
I’m eager to see what the rest of the course has to offer and share the journey with you both through my reports and with the upcoming activities planned with MHREC for the “Strengthening Children’s Rights Advocacy through International Training” project.
Stay tuned for part two of more musings from my Swedish sojourn.
Best, Julian
