Bridging our community: Exhibition

This catalogue is a collection of black out poetry as prepared by the participants of the session called ‘Building Bridges’ carried out on the 13th of April 2024 by the Malta Human Rights Education Centre (VO/2005) in part of the European Youth Week 2024.

A digital exhibition can be accessed here. It is an immersive and interactive experience. We hope that you enjoy the gallery!

In culmination of the ‘Building Bridges’ session which incorporated bibliotherapy methods to human rights discussions, participants were guided on how to use already printed and published pieces of text in order to create new meaning and express their thoughts and ideas. This resulted in these pieces of black out poetry which reflect in part, the kind of discussions carried out during the session.

The themes as found in these black out poems are varied and include concepts related to prejudice, discrimination, activism, democracy and equality. Some of the poems are abstract, others are more clear in their message. These poems are open to interpretation and are not meant to be restrictive in meaning; and it is for this reason that they remain untitled. It is up to the readers to come up with their own interpretation, and apply the words according to their own needs, thoughts and experiences.

This exhibition is being organised for the European Youth Week (EYW2024) and funded by the European Commission. This is a biennial event by the European Commission promoting youth engagement and active citizenship across Europe. It raises awareness of youth involvement in decision-making, fosters dialogue between young people and policymakers, and showcases the talents and projects of young Europeans.
