Taking action 2023: Blackout Poetry

As part of our summer volunteer and workshop series we held a session at the Ronald McDonald House Charities on human rights with a focus on blackout poetry as an interactive activity as a form of action.

But what is Blackout Poetry? This is the name of any type of poem that is created by blacking out any unwanted words from a paragraph of text, poster, book, sign, pamphlet etc. using any ink or coloring tools you have available. Anything that has words can be turned into a blackout poem.

The idea behind black out poetry is choosing words that resonate with the artist’s vision to create a new piece. With this in mind and what we had learnt about human rights and how we as citizens can make a difference and take action, we had a go at creating our own black out poetry.

As you can see, black out poetry is an effective tool for sharing thoughts and ideas in an innovative way; by creating new meanings from old newspapers and other text.

Check back next week to learn more about the next session held at the Ronald McDonald House Charities. We ll be focusing more on the practicalities of how we can take action.
