In commemoration of Human Rights Day, MHREC is pleased to share its activity held in collaboration with the Floriana local youth club. A learning and active discussion session was held with a group of eleven youngsters aged between 11-13 years. This was an opportunity to discuss human rights and their daily application in their daily lives.
Participants discussed notions including equality, freedom, a good and healthy life, right to safety and security, as well as active and responsible citizenship. The application of human rights in their daily schedules was also discussed, which included the right to education, right to work, right to family and so on. The intention here was to highlight the importance of human rights in their daily activities and bring human rights closer to them.
After the informative session, participants carried out an interactive group activity where they had to create and plan their own city. This was an opportunity for participants to draw what their ideal city would look like and work together in teams. Participants drew their favourite stores, entertainment facilities and other buildings and spaces. This exercise helped the youth to reflect on the application of human rights within their own cities; including homes, schools, hospitals, play grounds, theatres and so on.
Suffice to say that all participants were having a great time with their markers and drawing their perfect city…the session could have gone on for much longer!
It was a pleasure to meet such young and enthusiastic youth who are already contributing to a better world through their passion of learning more!

Here at MHREC, we strive to support and expand the education of human rights in Malta and we look forward to continuing to facilitate the discussion on human rights. As our team at MHREC grows, we look forward to increasing the non-formal learning activities and the dissemination of materials beyond Human Rights Day.
If you support a local youth/community group, feel free to get in touch with us to facilitate a discussion on human rights. We look forward to hearing from you!
