MHREC is happy to introduce its fantastic team of volunteers for the year 2023/2024. Keep on reading and come back over the next weeks to find out more about them and see what they have to say!

I’m Aunil. Much of my early childhood was spent in Iran, although I was born in Karachi. I have a bachelor’s in psychology and currently I’m pursuing my Masters in Resilience in Educational Contexts as an Erasmus Mundus Scholar. My next semesters would be in Greece, South Africa, Portugal, and Romania.
Since 2016 I have been working APAKA, an association of slum dwellers, researchers, academics, and policy experts that strives to highlight the housing crisis and for the rights of informal settlements throughout the country through social and legal education and peaceful demonstrations.
I founded two community schools in two different slum communities. One was in G-7 Katchi Abadi, a slum Christian minority community with 73 students enrolled who were working during the day and could study in the evening, and the other is in a Christian slum community displaced over blasphemy allegations in H-9, Islamabad.
With 5+ years of on-the-ground experience in the education sector in Pakistan, currently I am interested in how to eliminate the learning gap in under-resourced rural schools and maximize learning with limited resources through play-based activities. Also, figuring out how low-income families’ voices and needs could be included in the policies made in the education sector.
Hi, I’m iella! Primarily a designer and visual artist, my exciting career path has molded me into a creative industry unicorn: digital multimedia specialist, illustrator, storyboarder, consumer product designer, board game design, and graffiti artist!

I graduated with a BA in Art History from the University of Malta in 2011, followed by an MA in Communication Design (illustration) at Kingston University in 2013. In 2014 I was hired by Warner Media / Cartoon Network where I worked as a designer and illustrator till August 2023, when I decided to go freelance.
My personal work is influenced by 90s animation, video games and nature. It tends to be figurative and representational, and I often explore themes of fantasy, climate change, existentialism and personal experiences. I’m an active sketchbook keeper and life drawing fanatic.
We thank Aunil and Iella for their great contributions so far and look forward to working further with them.
Check back next week to meet more of our volunteers! Check out the overview of the current team here.
